Help for your beekeeping journey

How You Can Help!
Trapping for the yellow-legged hornet can be done with just a few household materials and a simple bait mixture. Although yellow-legged hornets may be present throughout the year in some areas, they are most active between March and October, and traps are most effective in collecting hornets in summer. This trap will catch several different kinds of wasps and hornets, but honey bees aren’t usually attracted to the trap.
Instructions on trapping and monitoring are listed below or can be downloaded using this link.

The Yellow-Legged Hornet
Did you encounter a suspected yellow-legged hornet in North Carolina? Let us know. Yellow-Legged Hornet Report Form
Vespa velutina, is an invasive hornet native to southeast Asia that was first detected in the United States in Savannah, Georgia, in 2023.
Problem: This hornet is a predator of honey bees, as well as native bees and insects. Yellow-legged hornets exhibit ‘hawking’ behavior by hovering near the entrances of honey bee hives and capturing honey bees as they exit or enter the hive.
